Britania Islands of Surigao del Sur

photos and words by Guest Blogger Clark Jayoma on March 17th, 2011

This is one of the coolest places I’ve ever been in our province. I admit I love to go places but asked myself also why go to far places when in fact we have such nice destinations close to our city like the now known Britania Islands located in the province of Surigao del Sur. It is a three-hour ride from my beloved hometown Butuan City. Of course, this will makes Caraga Region famous when precious white coral islands discovered facing the Pacific Ocean.

And when I saw the place for the first time, I can’t believe that we have a very, very awesome spot! These pictures simply show how amazing the place is. It is really breath-taking to see those small islands with white sands, because we did island hopping, and witnessed one island to another. The clear blue water was so tempting for anyone would like to go swimming and snorkelling. I could smell the sea breeze and hear the slashing waves hitting the shoreline while walking different islands. This makes Caraga Travel so full of fun and excitement.

Britania Islands Clusters Of 25 Islands And Islets

Britania Islands was composed of unspoiled 25 white coral islands and islets of sugary white sand and clusters of limestones hills. It lured me and my friends as we take our journey using rented pump boat seeing different islands, mangroves, and rock formations. You can also do bird watching and caving if you wish because you can do a lot of things here enjoying yourself with nature.

I’m not into caving but this one…romantic place for lovers and would-be lovers.

White sands were luscious white and powdery. It seems a real threat to Boracay.

Two rock islands started pressing against me. But the scene turns out beautiful.

I feel so lucky that once in my life I witnessed the beauty of God’s creation that I have never been. So rewarding because in the prime of my life I was able see the beauty of nature with the help of my friends of course. It is really a cool, serene place with such a nice view. Every island is unique. There is even a white island with nothing on it but white crystal like sand. And it is really amazing to be there realizing that it’s only a few hours from our city.

We bought fresh fishes and the local residents from there cooked for our lunch. We rented pump boats because it is the mode of transportation going from one island to another. By the way, I spent less than a thousand Philippine pesos for this wonderful, priceless experience.

We were planning to come back there soon.

See you Britania Islands!

We all know that the word backpacking of course comes from its root word backpack. When you are out in the wild and are going for an adventure it is always a good feeling when you know that you have the new backpacking gear attach to your body. backpacking caraga

Backpacking in Caraga is such a wonderful experience that I would urge all you backpackers out there to visit and do a bit of traveling in a motherly nature of Caraga. Backpacking Caraga: destinations that should be on your next itinerary.

Backpacking Tools

In modern times, the trend of hiking and trekking is increasing. Nothing can ruin a hiking, camping, or backpacking trip as being unprepared. So the next time you take a backpacking trip, make sure you have these ten essentials:

1. Map – assists one in not getting lost in the ground.
2. Compass (optionally supplemented with a GPS receiver) – the same idea of no.1 essentials.
3. Sunglasses and sunscreen – prevent any probable eye injury inflicted by sun light, tree branches and flying debris.
4. Extra food and water – prevent or cure hypothermia and dehydration.
5. Extra clothes – protect from hypothermia and the elements, including thorns, insects, sun, wind, and often cold.
6. Headlamp (outdoor)/ flashlight – protect from physical injury when traveling in the dark.
7. First aid kit – commonly contains items to treat cuts, abrasions, punctures and burns.
8. Fire starter – to light a campfire is helpful for preventing hypothermia and to signal for aid. In a disaster, a fire increases one’s psychological will to survive.
9. Matches – the same idea of no. 8 essentials.
10. Knife – useful for opening kits, building shelter, shaving wood for tinder, eating, ground surgery (after sterilization), cutting rope and clothing, etc.

Other Paraphernalia

Additional thing is to have a whistle signaling for any danger that might come in your way. As I mentioned before when having a backpacking trip, it is important to have an ultra lightweight backpacking in which the backpack itself speaks the weight. Like getting in a rogue mountain of splendid Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee is very easy. It will carry you in an endless way like your best friend attaching each other.

If you have been using a traditional backpacking tent, it is a smart idea to verify up on a tarp that can serve as a suitable shelter. Then pick a backpacking tent to handle the worst conditions you are probably to face with. A couple of tents offer also an amazing weight saving design. This is notably important aspect in getting shelter to the unknown exciting place like trekking in Mt. Hilonghilong of Agusan del Norte and the majestic Mt. Mayapay of Butuan City.

How about replacing those heavy, hot hiking boots and walk in comfort on your next backpacking trip? Yes, you can. With sixteen pounds on your back, and running shoes in preference to hiking boots, you are backpacking farther, higher, and more enjoyable.

Backpacking could be a fun and adventurous way to spend a weekend with your friends and family.

Travel Facilities for Caraga – dream of the future!

January 25, 2009 3 Comments

I have been in love with travel sites going places around the globe, the services, and the magnitude of access to different tourist destinations. This could be my latest haunt across the internet in searching for the best deals to anyone that loves traveling. I have been dreaming that Caraga will be listed in one of their destination sites, unfortunately, nothing you can search, and it seems it is a hidden paradise in the eastern part of the globe – untouched and unexploited. Yes, Caraga is a rising paradise that you love to exploit in the near future.

In order to reach Caraga, three main important facilities are needed such as airport, seaport, and land travel. Airport is the most convenient of them all because it will carry you to the fastest of time. Besides it is the most demanded if it has the cheap flights than traveling in the water.

Although we have some marine boats to transfer passengers into an inter island escapade. Then, how about a world class cruise to suit the needs of the visiting tourists in Caraga? Come on, let me see it in the future. Land trip is one of the easiest things in going to a place that is in your mind. But when the road cut right away for another island, you have to take some boat ride. And there you can choose the best cruise facilities in your niche. How I wish for a cruise facilities in Caraga.

Flights direct from Manila posed significant value in reaching Caraga with now a total of 4 domestic flights in Butuan City which is the center of Caraga. The airport needs to be expanded in terms of infrastructure and modern technologies just to accommodate the needs of every tourist or visitors coming to the region. The Department of Tourism already reported last year the 5% increased of tourist arrival. By the way, do we need to have international flights here in Caraga? Yes, it is my dreamed someday that this thing will becomes a reality.

How I love seeing large and international aircraft started to operate in Caraga. Getting the best of Qantas and United airlines in the future. Nevertheless, it is appropriate to say that Caraga is an international tourist destination.

Caraga – a place of never-ending adventures

April 20, 2008 42 Comments

CARAGAcan be traced back to the 15th century when explorers discovered the existence of Kalagans, believed to be of Visayan Origin in one of the three districts in Mindanao. The word Caraga originated from the Visayan word “Kalagan”: “Kalag” meaning soul or people and “An” meaning land. The “Kalagans” have a long history of being brave and fearless. Thus, the region was called by early chroniclers as the “Land of the Brave and Fierce People.”

The “Kalagans”, called “Caragans” by the Spaniards occupied the district composed of the two provinces of Surigao, northern part of Davao Oriental and Eastern Misamis Oriental. The two Agusan Provinces were later organized under the administrative jurisdiction of Surigao and became the independent Agusan province in 1914. In 1960, Surigao was divided as Norte and Sur, and in June 1967, Agusan followed suit. While Butuan then was just a town of Agusan, the logging boom in 1950’s drew business and businessmen to the area. On August 2, 1950. by virtue of Republic Act 523, the City Charter of Butuan was approved.
CARAGA is an Administrative Region of the Philippines, on the northeastern portion of the island of Mindanao. It is the newest region in the Philippines, and is also called Region XIII. The Caraga Region was created through Republic Act Number 7901 on February 25, 1995. The region is composed of five (5) provinces: Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur, and the newly created province, Dinagat Islands (from Surigao del Norte); six (6) cities: Butuan, Surigao and Bislig, and recently, the newly created component cities: Cabadbaran, Bayugan, and Tandag; seventy (70) municipalities and 1,346 barangays. Butuan City is the regional center. It’s haven for tourists and adventurers. The region hosts two of the Philippines’ 10 National Integrated Protected Areas – the Siargao Seascape, and the 100,000-hectare Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary – as well as world class dive, surfing, and sport fishing sites, mountains trekking and biking, white sand beaches, hot and cold springs, caves, rivers, forests, and waterfalls. If you are seeking a challenging experience or simply an escapade from the humdrum of urban life, venture no more… Come and experience adventure one can find south of the Philippines islands that simply lures visitors to frolic in its pristine beauty.
